Anger & PAR Programs


Counselling Programs for Men who exhibit Angry, Violent, or Controlling Behaviour

Format: Group (Online) or Private, Individual (In-person or online)

Duration: 12 weeks (PAR) or 8 weeks (Anger)

Fees: *A receipt will be issued each week for Social Work/Psychotherapy services for reimbursement if you have benefit/insurance coverage for Social Work services

PAR (Partner Assault Response) Program:

This psychoeducation and group meeting format involves 12 sessions on the following topics:

  • Week 1: Introduction to the Program based on the Duluth Model of treating Domestic Violence and learn the benefits of participating in these 12 weeks to prevent anger, violence, and controlling behaviours from damaging your relationships.
  • Week 2: Anger & Toxic Masculinity
  • Week 3: Beliefs, Attitudes, & Values
  • Week 4: Effects of Behaviour on our Partner, Family, Children & Self
  • Week 5: Power & Control
  • Week 6: Understanding Warning Signs & Triggers
  • Week 7: Impact of Substance & Alcohol Use on Relationships
  • Week 8: Demonstrating Respect & the art of Respectful Communication
  • Week 9: Healthy Relationships
  • Week 10: Dealing with Conflict
  • Week 11: Responsibility & Accountability
  • Week 12: Closing Session – Creating a Commitment to Myself & Future Partner to Safe Relationships

This program is intended for men who are experiencing difficulties in their lives or relationships due to their angry, controlling, withholding, and/or abusive behaviours.

Group Format: Weekly meetings are online. Members of the group commit to confidentiality agreements and respectful, supportive, nonjudgemental and appropriate behaviour towards self, facilitators, and other group members in the program. This is intended to be a safe space to grow and learn together.

The intention of this program is to provide tools, skills, and resources to support men in choosing healthy relationships, behaviours, and coping skills when faced with challenges in their interpersonal relationships.

This program has been designed to comply with the requirements of court-mandated PAR or Anger management programming. We will work with your lawyer to request permission from the Crown to complete your counselling either with a group or privately.

Anger Program:

This psychoeducation and group meeting format involves 8 sessions on the following topics:

  • Session 1: Introduction to anger work – Angry? You’re not alone! So what’s the problem?
  • Session 2: Anger Awareness (internal cues: psychological and physiological changes) and Grounding techniques to transform anger into vulnerability if appropriate.
  • Session 3: Power and control issues in relationships. Gender roles, masculinity and learning to accept influence from our partners.
  • Session 4: More anger interventions and applications – i.e., non-retaliation in confrontations, defusing anger in interpersonal interactions, mindfulness in everyday life, letting go, keeping an anger journal
  • Session 5: Effective communication in the partner relationship. Stress management in Relationships.
  • Session 6: Family of origin issues as these relate to partner conflict. The healthy partner relationship – Core characteristics.
  • Session 7: Overview of Gottman Method Interventions and Skills for healthy relationships that have not yet been covered in our sessions.
  • Session 8: Closing session – Creating a commitment to myself (and future or current partners) to safe and healthy relationships.
